remier national provider of telecommunications training in Malaysia. Founded in 1948, the college was initially responsible for providing training to staff of the then Telecommunications Department. The setting up of a new telecommunications training centre was witnessed in 1961 with a joint-venture between the United Nations and the Malaysian Government under the United Nations Development Programme. In 1980, five regional training schools or branch campuses were established in Taiping, Kuala Terengganu, Melaka, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu to facilitate training of the increasing number of staff. The year itself also saw the appointment of Multimedia College as a training provider responsible in providing training to other Commonwealth countries through the Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation's (CTO) arrangement with its headquarters in London, UK. Multimedia College has also been given the responsibility of organising the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) under the Prime Minister's Department to train and encourage knowledge sharing especially in the telecommunications and ICT industries with a membership of more than 133 countries. The participants involved have been mostly from Mauritius, Malawi, Indonesia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Laos, Vietnam and Gambia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Burkina Faso, Philippines, DPR Korea, Timor-Leste and Yemen. Apart from that, the college actively participates in the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) and Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC).
Multimedia College was later awarded the ISO 9002 certification by SIRIM in the year 1998 to recognise the high quality management of its training programmes. In 2002, under the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications, the college was appointed the sole Certifying Agency for the Malaysian telecommunications industry by the Malaysian Communication & Multimedia Commission.
As an organisation of which the main responsibility is to provide training and development at various levels for staff of TM and its subsidiaries, Multimedia College via the Training Unit and its three main schools namely School of Engineering, School of IT and Multimedia, and School of Management conducted 2,686 courses for over 52,138 trainees in year 2005.
